We recently converted an older Compaq Proliant 800 to Windows 98.

The Intel/Netflex card is set up and the network sees it. This is an older NT system running on IPX not IP so we are not concerned with IP addresses.

The NT login screen comes up...but the PC cannot find the server. Another computer at the same physical location can login.

Bindings seem to be okay.

The option to log in to an NT domain is properly configured.

Anyone have any thoughts?

What is the Frame Type setting...if auto change it to the specific Frame Type the server is running. I think the default for NT server is 802.3.

Also, are you using the Netflex driver that is native to Windows 98? You may want to try setting some of its properties to fixed values instead of auto...i.e. - speed, duplex, and media.

Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com

Just try changing the system name. We had same type of problem, we reinstalled the drivers and everything, atlast it worked with change in system name.

Rajalakshmi.
dassraji@hotmail.com

Protocols 101....

NT and Novell use the 802.2 standard. 802.3 was Novell's implementation way back when for ethernet.
You can review this information through the RFC, or support.novell.com or MS technical web site.

I think the question you should look at is which IP frame type are you using in conjunction to the 802.X That would be one of the following:

Ethernet_Snap or Ethernet_II If you have cisco equiment on your lan, you definately need to use the Ethernet_II with 802.2, or no talky.

Hope this helps

Mark C. and Netware 5. I also have my BS in MIS

I stand corrected. 802.3 is an IEEE standard but was first created by DIX (Digital, Intel, and Xerox); 802.2 is now the standard frame type for ethernet in conjunction with the ethernet_snap or ethernet_ii.

Mark C.
