I have a windows 2003 standard server and I am trying to connect through the windows VPN.
I followed the instructions to create a VPN host and the client.
When I try to log in I get a login authentication error. I am using the same name and password that I use to logon locally and it doesn't work. I am not locked out of my account and I have admin rights on my network server.

I need help with a login error

What is the desktop operating system that you are using to connect from

Have you tried to use the username, DOMAIN\Username or username@domain?

Under the user's profile you'll see a tab named "Dial-In" Make sure the user you're trying to log onto through vpn has ALLOW ACCESS. fyi

I've tried user@domain.com and they have allow access under dial in.

wannabie2,

Are you trying to setup the vpn tunnel from inside the lan or outside.

If outside you will need to open port 1723 or forward it to your external nic of the ras server.

HTH.

Peter.

Remember- It's nice to be important,
but it's important to be nice :)

Port 1723 is open. it wants to connect but I'm having trouble with authentication.

What are the error logs saying in the server. The application log normally will tell you if you are having other issues.

eg.

A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client
> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be
> completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router
> between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow
> Generic Routing Encapsulation
> (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers
> between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure
> the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to
> allow GRE packets.
> If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service
> provider
> (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets.

but it's important to be nice :)

by some twist of fate I got the connection. the only thing is I can't ping my server or anything else on the other side.

I'm trying to use a VPN connection to the server to use microsoft exchange and it isn't working. I get the message that the server is unavailable, but I'm attached to it.
