When a USB device is connected, WinME freezes with the window "upgrading hardware database" displayed. A reboot with the hardware connected results in the same symptom. It boots OK without any USB devices, but will not let me connect any without the lockup. I attempted to upgrade the USB driver, but the computer either locks up during load or I get a message that the file could not be read and may be corrupt. I then tried removing the USB controller to see if a fresh install would cure the problem. After that, ME locked up immediately on booting up with the same message "upgrading hardware database". I then reinstalled ME. The reinstall took five hours to complete, but now I am back to my starting point. Can anybody help?

Did you install the drivers for your usb device first? Usually that's what you need to do. what type of device are you trying to install?

Also if your reinstall too 5 hours, there may be a problem with your hard drive. Have you tried doing a thorough scandisk (in safe mode)?

also have a look how the usb settings in your bios are... but scandisk is a good idea

Thanks for your responses, but I gave up and upgraded to Windows 2000. It was a hassle finding all the correct drivers but I consider it to be the only reasonable move considering I never want to see another ME system. Microsoft should be forced to replace this piece of crap.
