I have been using WordPerfect 11 for a couple of months; it came installed on my laptop (XP OS). Suddenly I cannot initialize it. I am the only user.

Any clues?

I am getting a "Cannot Initialize" error window when I try to launch it. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but I still get the cannot initialize error box.

Here are 3 things to try.
1. Rename the wpus11.wpt file and start wp.
2. Set some other print driver as the default and/or install new print drivers. Windows print dirvers for HP printers usually work best.
3. After a fresh reboot, delete all temp files in your temp folder like c:\temp.

Having the same problem re "cannot initialize" after install of WP Office 11. Where is wpus11.wpt located? I do not see it.

khobson: thanks for the suggestions. i posted my results below, but, in short, no luck.

1. Rename the wpus11.wpt file and start wp.

--> there is no such file on my computer. this file is also not on the WordPerfect 11 installation disk.
--> is it supposed to be there to begin with?

2. Set some other print driver as the default and/or install new print drivers. Windows print dirvers for HP printers usually work best.

--> my only printer is an HP, but, just in case, i installed a different HP printer driver as the default; it did not work.

3. After a fresh reboot, delete all temp files in your temp folder like c:\temp.

-->there are no files in my temp folder.

I would appreciate any other suggestions. tmadigan: if you find any answer please let me know!

thanks.

The us in wp11us.wpt is the country code. Change that as needed. WP always creates this file if it does not exist. Do a search from c:\ and find wp11*.wpt. I've never heard of it not existing. I guess that could happen if you had faulty installation. If so, uninstall wp and then reinstall.

As for print drivers, HP drivers are known for problems. Just install any print driver and set it's port to print to file and set it as your default printer.

If you have no files in your temp folder you must not have this set up. Windows is putting files in some temporary folder. At c:\ search for *.tmp. This should tell you where the temp files are going. It is always best to delete these after a fresh reboot.

While it won't help here, it is best to delete your history and temp files in your internet explorer.

Thanks, khobson, but darned if I can find wp11us.wpt (I am in US)or any similar variation (wp11*.wpt). Have done uninstalls, clean reinstalls, etc. Any other ideas?

When you say that you can't find it, how are you searching? The reason I ask is that I don't know your level of ability. If you want to try a search from DOS, start the program to launch a DOS window. At the prompt, type c:. Then, cd c:\. Then, dir w*11*.wpt. This should then show the path to the wp11us.wpt file or variants therein.

What windows operating system are you using?

Are you on a network? Is wp installed to a network or local pc?

If all else fails, we could try putting a wp11us.wpt on your computer. I'd need it up for a default printer that you use. If you want to pursue this idea, email me at khobson at aaahawk.com.

Still, it worries that after an install, wp11us.wpt was not found. You may have a defective cdrom and it makes me wonder what else was not installed.

You might try uninstalling wp11 and then installing the Trial version. You can then copy the wp11us.wpt file and then uninstall the wp11 trial version and install the registered version.

This link might help with the process of install and uninstall.

I found the file. The name had a couple of letters juxtaposed in khobson's first reply.

Unfortunately, after changing the name,

and installing a third, non-HP, print driver, setting it as default, and print-to-file,

and finding my temp files and deleting them,

and uninstalling WP again,

rebooting, with system restore turned off,

and reinstalling the program...

it still will not initialize.

Oops, sorry about that.

Just ininstalling wp is not enough. Look at this article at kb.corel.com to see how it is done.

When you initialization error, what is the exact error message? Email a screen print to my khobson at aaahawk.com if you like.

For some networks, Paradox can cause an initialization error.
Is this an initial install or a patch? Try running the repair program on the cdrom.
Have you tried installing as Administrator and then launching as Administrator. It may be a permission issue.
