although the switch is in use, we never have really configured it.

so my understanding is that the 2650 must be setup via the console, it doesnt have an IP address until you set that up.

of course none of our xp laptops have a serial port, and I cannot locate my usb to serial adapter (and have not always had success with it anyway).

I did find an old windows 98 laptop, and tried to setup the hyperterminal settings as per the manual( anywhere from 1200 to 115200, 8 data, 1 stop, no parity, and flow control set at xon/xoff.

of course we cannot find the original cable, so I have to use a gender converter to connect two different serial cables between the PC and the switch.

although hyperterminal says connected, I never get a prompt, and even if I disconnect the cable it says connected, so that is aggravating.

what could I try next to get this to work?
are there perhaps settings on the serial port itself that might need to be changed?

some of the options it asks to change on hyperterminal do not appear on the win 98 version, or at least I couldnt find it.

any help would be appreciated.

I personally use Teraterm which is a freebie and can be found if you google for it. Check your cable again. I have the correct HP cable in front of me and on a tester the pin layout is 1-1, 2-3,3-2,4-6,5-5,6-4,7-8,8-7,9-9

The switch should respond to 9600, 8 bits, 1 stop & no parity. Once connected with a cable you have verified the return key needs to be hit a couple of times this should make the switch auto sense 9600 baud. The HP switch manual can be found at HP.com

Providing all your cabling is correct, you'll need to hit ENTER 3 times to wake up the switch.
