Cannot hear sound linked to a slide in PPT

I have Office 2003 and have had no problem hearing sounds attached to PowerPoint shows others have designed. When I tried to attach (following all the correct steps, I believe) my own sound (recorded as either an MP3 or a WAVE file - tried both versions)to a slide, there is no sound. However, when I played the slideshow on another computer, it worked fine.

I have a two year old machine, 1 GIG RAM, Windows XP, and everything else seems to run OK. Any ideas, or am I just out of luck?
