I am trying to instal NetLink Modem Router for a small windows network (running NT4 and 98 clients). I have set up the router so that it is not providing dhcp, but in the router manual, it specifies that the router ip address should be set at 10.0.0.x, subnet 255.0.0.0.

If my LANs IP range is 192.168.x.x, subnet 255.255.255.0, does this mean that i have to change my LANs IP range - or should i be able to configure the router in the range 192.168.x.x?

I have managed to get the router to perform sync with ISP, resolve a DNS query but it fails when it goes to ping Message is not failed but something vague that is not mentioned in the help file!

I am not sure if this is enough info for anyone to help, but please ask anything else that i have missed!!

The easiest thing would be to change your LAN IP subnet to 10.0.0.x

router IP 10.0.0.1

Static IPs -- see the manual. You should avoid using fixed IPs inside the DHCP scope of the router.

Have followed your advice and managed to get router to function. Many thxs

One problem though is that when the clients are automatically picking up their ip address from the server, they are not picking up any default gateway.

The server is running NT4 and I have not much experience in administering - is there a setting which allows us the default gateway for all dhcp clients?

Any help would be appreciated.

Under the Properties sheet for your Network Connection, highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP, click the Properties button, and click the Advanced button near the bottom.

Under the panel that opens you will see mid-screen the opportunity to add the Gateway IP.
