XP machine, hopefully SP3, not sure. Software vendor was using LogMeIn rescue to update some database files. He noticed some folder permissions that were not optimum on a non system folder, changed them then rebooted.

Now the machine will only come up to the Safe Mode options screen. No matter which option you choose, it reboots to the Safe Mode screen again.

Not knowing the admin password I used NTOffline to blank it out so I could get into Recovery Console. I did a fixboot but no change. Doing a chkdsk /p /r now.

Any ideas? Is there a registry entry to NOT go to safe mode screen? Does LogMeIn Rescue leave a "cookie" to start up again and how can I remove that?

TIA

I will try editing boot.ini after my chkdsk finishes so I can remove the safemode option.

Chkdsk said it corrected some things, no details. Using ERD Commander to edit boot.ini to remove /SAFE:NETWORK.

Showed Safe Mode screen next boot, but complied with my Start Windows Normally.

Hmmm...

Is there any settings in the MsConfig tool that have been set to boot into Safe Mode? If that was set you would see it under the Boot tab.

disable safe mode

leads me to believe that the software vendor did more than change NON-SYSTEM folder permissions!!!...

you could use the attrib command from the recovery console to change back the attributes of the folder(s) in question, e.g. attrib -r -s -a -h "folder" or easier yet, use a BartPE bootable WinXP CD to change them, using the GUI...
