Hi folks,
unfortunately I am a complete newbie in Linux
(did all my stuff with Novell, so far)
with the following problem:
whem I try to access to my new-created Linux-Server
(Apache, Wu-FTPd and Samba on it) via FTP on
my window$98 machine, the dos-box hangs for
about 1 minute, then i get the message
'connecting to <ip-no. of the linux-server>'
an then: 'Connection terminated by remote-host'.
Ping works, telnet works. I dived into the
linuxconf-tool, the entries 'Guest groups'
and 'Banner file' have no entry. Important or not?

Has anybody some ideas?

Thank you so much!

Roland.
Roland Kuprat
kuprat@zentrallabor.klinik.uni-mainz.de

Are you running on a 10 or 100M network? I had a similar problem on my network which was 100. I forced the hub to go down to ten and it worked. I read that there is a setting in the kernel that tells it to use a 100 M network.

Troy
fenris@hotmail.com

Thanks for this quick response, but i have also a 10M network!
May there any log files written by Linux to get closer to my problem (except /var/log)?

Thanks, Roland.
Roland Kuprat

Can you ping linux from the windows boxes? Can you access the webserver from you windows box? Can linux ping the windows machines?

try checking /etc/hosts.allow and see if the ip addresses of your internal network are there, something like: 192.168.0.0/24

Troy
fenris@hotmail.com

Hi, Fenris!
Yes, i can ping from Linux to Windows and the other way round.
And i can access the apache server. When i enter the linux ip adress i get the
"It works!"-Screen. But you are right, there was no entry in the hosts.allow .
But after entering my ip adresses there and rebooting both machines, ftp still does not work.
By the way: when i try ftp from the linux-termial to itself (the ip-no. of the linux machine),
it works.( Of course, it is good for nothing, but it may show that ftp works standalone.)
May there additional rights to set?

I don't get on it.

Thanks

Roland

when you say you try to ftp from linux to itself it works, what address are you using, the nic or the loopback ie 192.168.0.x or the name of the linux box. I don't have access to my linux box at this moment, but I believe that in /etc there is an ftp.allow or something like that. You also might want to check /etc/hosts.deny as well. You may have already covered this, but is there an entry in your host file for the machines. Can you get nmap (<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and run a port scan on your linux box to see what is up and where. You could also try killall -HUP inetd...

Good luck....
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com
