My husband is having trouble ftping to any ftp sites now. He has a Mac G4 running Mac OS 10.2.8. I have a PC running WIndows XP Pro SP2. We are both connected to the Internet using cable high speed. We are both using the same firewall router. I have no problems ftping to the sites he cannot. He use to be able to ftp to these sites and all of the sudden he cannot. He can connect to the Internet just fine and go to web sites. He hasn't installed anything new or made any changes to his Mac. When he tries to ftp the connection just times out. He has tried to connect using his ftp software and Dreamweaver. Neither one will go. We tried to restart the Mac, thinking something was hung up, but that didn't help. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

1. What software is he using to FTP?
2. What happens when he tries to FTP? What errors does he get?
3. Did you check system preferences->sharing->firewall and verify that the Mac's built-in firewall is turned off, or, if it is on, that FTP is allowed?
4. Did you check system preferences->network->proxies and verify that he didn't accidentally turn on an FTP proxy?

I can't go to ftp sites thru Safari. I have to use Explorer.
Fetch works the best. I was using transmit, but sometimes it has problems.

Well, I was able to solve my own issue. It turns out that for the firewall that is turned on it the Mac OS, FTP wasn't not enabled. My husband had never had this enabled before when the ftp did work. I had him enable it now just to see what would happen and he was able to ftp again. Issue resolved.

tamtam,

Glad to hear your problem was solved.

kentucky,

Safari doesn't support FTP; but you can use the Finder's built-in "connect to server" and give it an ftp:// address.
