cannot free hdd space

Hello people from all over the world!!!
I have this problem: I realised that one of my hdd's partition is running out of space. I burned some data from it, than deleted it using shift+delete key combination. The data from the disk dissapeared but the free space didn't get bigger. It remained at the same size it was before.
What can I do?
How can I free my hdd?
