Cannot Edit in Word

Word XP (WIN2KPRO) works fine if you open Word, then open a file. If you open a file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, the file opens in Word, but the keyboard and mouse do nothing (cannot get a pulldown, cannot click in the text, etc.). I looked in Folder Options and the setting look correct for file type "doc". I don't know much about DDE, but it seems that maybe that is the problem. Is DDE associated with some files that may need re-installing?
