Odd problem this...

NT4 SP6a.

Double clicking on my computer does nothing. When I right click on it all items in the submenu such as open and explorer are not there (although items such as copy\paste\properties are). I can run explorer from the run option but again I can not open anything on the right handside, I have to click once on the folder listing on the left hand-side.

Additionally to this when trying to run internet explorer the initial I.E.6 screen flashes up - then nothing. However when in normal explorer double clicking on a normal executable does work (but not a folder).

Have tried different profiles
basic and long scan disk show no errors
Have ran regfix
Have re-installed NTSP6a
Have Virus scanned

Sounds like you have some sort of registry corruption - but I'd hate to have find it! I'd be tempted to just backup and reinstall (unless you have some history to the problem which might shed light on its origin - eg hardware/software changes, crashes, virus before it started happening).

PS. If you ran rdisk recently, before you got this problem \WINNT\repair should contain compressed versions of the registry hives (default._, sam._, security._, software._, system._). If you mounted the drive as slave in another machine, you could use the expand command to reconstute these files, and copy them over the current registry hives in \WINNT\system32\config (back those up first, in case).
