Cannot delete tasks from Project Server

I have several tasks that were assigned through the Project Server. For various reasons these tasks have been reassigned to a different resource or deleted completely. The tasks continue to show up in the resource's task list with an indicator that it has been deleted, but it cannot be removed.

The only way I have found to remove the task is to delete the project from the server completely and re-send.

Is there an easier way to get rid of these deleted tasks?

You can hide the task from the timesheet which is virtually deleting the tasks.
