The defrag util on my Windows 2000 sp4 server starts but when I click on Analyse or defrag nothing happens. Nothing get entered into the event logs and there are no errors of any kind.

I've rebooted the server and I am logged on as Administrator.

Any help is appreciated.

Does the DFRAG window hang? ...if defrag hangs, you may have a severly fragmented hard drive. You may need to upgrade to a third party defragmentation program. Or in a real bad scenerio, you may need to reinstall your OS.

However, if you click defrag and nothing happens, and the application does not hang, it just might be a problem with the dfrg.msc. In a sever case, you can try to copy dfrg.msc from another similar machine (same service pack level, os level, etc).

Thanks for the advice but it didn't resolve my problem.
I don't believe the drives are fragmented to the point that it would be a problem. The server is less than a year old and doesn't have a lot of data being changed.

The defrag program doesn't hang it just doesn't start to defrag.

have you tried to defrag it from the cmd line?
