I am using Microsoft Outlook 97. If I attempt to access a new message from within a web page (such as clicking on a Contact or E-mail link, my system advises in a small Microsoft Caution Box: "Cannot create the item".

In order to send the new message, I must right click on the link to get the address, go to Outlook, open a new message and manually type in the address.

This problem has only developed within the last month, so I am sure it is some setting that has been changed. However, I have not been able to discover its source. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

There is a Microsoft article that fits your description and may be helpful as it provides a fix. The articles assumes you are (or were) also using the Exchange client which uses a different form technology than Outlook 97. The "SwitchForms" utility, downloadable from Microsoft, apparently fixes this problem. I'm also wondering if possibly Internet Explorer's mail program option is set for a different email client (Tools|Internet Options|"Programs" tab|Email). Hope this helps.

Open Windows Explorer and go to TOOLS - OPTIONS and then FILE TYPES. Look up the file assoication for URL:MailTo Protocol and look at the command line it is running.

It should read like:

"C:\Program Files\ESOE\Microsoft Office\Office\outlook.exe" -c IPM.Note /m "%1" joegz
