Greetings:

I'm just starting getting aquainted with wireless networking (well, with networking in general anyway), so I apologize if I sound clueless about this.

I bought a Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A+G Notebook Adapter and a Wireless-G Broadband Router. I don't have cable modem or DSL, only a 56k dial-up, though I plan to install cable in the near future. In the meantime I connected my PC's LAN card to the LAN port of the router so I could connect wirelessly with my notebook and play Unreal Tournament with my niece. (I normally use a crossover cable for that.)

My notebook can detect the network, share files with my PC, share my Lexmark Z55 printer (even if it gives me a "LXAKJSWX.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close" error first), and play games like Icewind Dale II. However, neither Dungeon Siege nor Unreal Tournament can detect the LAN game running in my PC (and vice-versa). If I connect both machines physically with the cable I can play without any problem.

I don't know if this is enough information for you people to help me. Let me know if there's anything else I must add.

Ah, I'm running WinXP Pro with the SP1 patch on both machines. The A+G Notebook Adapter has the latest drivers. Since I don't have cable modem I cannot access the web-based interface of the WRT54G of course. :p

PS By the way... can I share my dial-up internet connection with my laptop as well? It looks like I cannot acces it either (while I can do that as well when I connect both machines phisically with the crossover cable).

PS 2: Strike out the part about not having a broadband connection to "access the web-based interface of the WRT54G," I managed to access it. I'm still at a loss on how to make my laptop see the multiplayer session on my PC (and vice-versa).

Update:

I want to give this posting a sense of closure, just in case someone comes here with a similar question.

It turns out that my problem had to do with the protocol one of my game uses. Black Isle games like Icewind Dale II and Baldur's Gate use IPX. Someone told me that IPX really is IP based routing with minimal crc checking and collision avoidance. Since wireless networks suck for collisions, errors, and especially lost packets, then the problem may be related to that.

I disabled IPX, and now I Unreal Tournament and DungeonSiege can see their respective multiplayer sessions. I'll enable it only when playing IWD II.

I still don't know if it is possible to access my dial-up modem connection in my PC using the wireless net, but I'll place that question on a separate thread.
