I have an XP machine, installed Symantec AV and it will not let me connect to Symantec update site. For that matter to test, it will also not allow connection to any Macafee site.

So, checked C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc hosts file which is OK with no unusual entries. Also checked registry location:

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasepath

for pointer to %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc which is set to this default.

Also, there are no hidden files in this directory. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Have you tried a traceroute? What's nslookup report?

Sounds like the machine is infected with something.

Sounds infected. Try Malware Bytes. Seems to do a good job for me. Then manually get rid of whatever is on the machine infecting it.
