SQL server was shut down for maintenance(SQL 7 SP4) Since then some users cannot connect from their pc's to the server database using named pipes. If we reconfigure to tcp it works ok. Only sporadically affected users i.e some were ok (still on named pipes) some were not.
Error message recieved

SQL State 01000
SQL Server Error 5
SQL State 08001
SQL Server Error 2
Access is denied

Have changed affected users to TCP as a workaround but would appreciate some advice regardind permanent fix.

I beleive that Error 5 is still a permissions error. Check the Share permissions on the server. What OS is the Server?

Server is NT4 SP6. Have checked permissions and nothing untoward.

Are you able to access the server via "\\servername" from the machines that can not log into the SQL via named pipes?

I've got a feeling in my bones that it's an OS issue, not a SQL issue. I'm trying to remember my NT 4. Everything I've got has been upgraded already.

I'll keep thinking though.
