Hi there,

My first post here......hope all goes well!

I am very new to this kind of stuff so i appologise in advance for being a numpty!

There are a couple og threads similar to this one but none really solve my issue.

I installed WAMP5 and all was well untill i uploaded my site to my host using dreamweavers built in ftp client.

After that I could not view any pages on localhost, it tried to open a page for ages (using all of the cpu usage) but just returned nothing (including phpadmin).

I re installed WAMP5 and all was well again.

However, i have just uploaded my site again using my hosts ftp client, and the same thing has happened!!

I have tried to view my error log but it's too large to open!! it's 801,814kb.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks in advance

I'm a little lost when you talk about dreamweaver's ftp client and your host's ftp client. What are you using for the ftp server or why do you need to use ftp at all when you are copying files from one place on the local drive to another? What is the name of your index file and what was the name of the original?

ok, i was uploading to my host(third party), not MY local server.

Dreamweaver has its own built in ftp software, i used that the first time.

My host also has its own built in ftp software, i used that the second time.

the problem isn't with the uploaded files, they all work fine. its with my local server (apache), now I can't view anything localy. I'm no expert but its kind of as if the server isnt running but WAMP controller says it is.

So what does uploading to a third party server have to do with not being able to view pages on localhost? Sorry but I'm just not understanding your problem.

as far as i can see, it has nothing to do with it whatso ever.

But this is the problem i'm having. the two events (uploading and cant view locally) might just have happened at the same time twice. But its a hell of a coincidance aint it!

i'm not saying that they have something to do with each other, i was just letting everyone know what i was doing both times that the problem occured.

Do you get an error page? Can you delete or rename the error log and restart apache so you can read the new log? I don't mean to ask so many questions but this is very strange. I'm trying to find the common thread between ftping to a remote site and apache quiting locally.

firstly, sorry for the delay in answering.

Secondly, i am really stuck with this, so you can ask as many questions as you see fit!!

Sometimes i get the usual 'page cannot be displayed' message. Mostly tho the page just stays blank (white) untill it times out or i get fed up of waiting!

I have moved the original error file and it put a new one there all by itself. It has the following errors logged:-

[Sun Jan 28 18:59:02 2007] [notice] ModSecurity for Apache 2.0.4 configured

that is at the start of the log, but then this line appears thousands of times :-

[Sun Jan 28 18:59:10 2007] [error] (OS 10038)An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. : Child 3092: Encountered too many errors accepting client connections. Then this lot:-

the 2 lines that have been repeated lots of times make up alomost all of the the 801,814kb file.

I've just noticed that the new error log is already 75k in size and its only about 5 mins old. I think that its being continuesly written to.

hope this helps a bit.

I am completely stumped myself. I am very new at running a server on windows. In real live I run only linux servers. However, it seems like most of the apache problems are on windows boxes. To get myself where I can feel their pain, I installed a wamp package on a windows box at home. I installed Apache2Triad which seemed to be ok so far. I just have one blog running on it so I guess that is not much of a test. What I am finding out though is there is no comparison betreen wamp packages. Some want to reboot every time you look at it. As I said though, apache2triad seems to be the most stable and comes with the most stuff. Do not rely on my opinion alone on this because it could be that this box just happens to get along with this distro. Ordinarily I would be the last person to suggest reinstalling anything as a means of fixing it, but if this package gave you fits from the start, there may be no hope for it. I have seen a flury of wamp5 issues here lately if that tells you anything. It may sound like I'm picking on wamp5 but the truth of the matter is I'm picking on windows in general. I don't think it is stable enough or secure enough to run a serious server.

thanks for your help RhythmAce, but I really need some more help.

Can anyone else help here please?
