One of our salespeople retrieves e-mail remotely, through a cable modem/VPN connection from home to our mail server. The mail server runs Exchange 2k and he uses Outlook 2k, on a Dell laptop. The problem comes about when he tries to access his personal folders, (PST), that resides on a file server, (not the mail server), to which, he is mapped. The mapping is fine, he can send and receive mail with no problem, however, when he tries to open his “personal folders” below, all he gets is a gray screen that says “unable to open this set of folders…etc.”. I have checked permissions on the server that has his PST on it, and he has full permission for his user folder and all files contained in it. If I re-create a “personal folder” in the “services” window and re-connect to his mapped drive/PST file,(ex: D:\users\userfolder\user.pst), it will work fine until he disconnects and re-establishes the VPN connection. If anyone has run into this problem and has any suggestions on a fix, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Lou Visciano

This is a known issue with SP3 using PST's on a mapped network drive.

Unfortunately, there's no solution, and the only workaround is to have the PST local.
