I have been having this problem with mine and my wifes laptops both running WinXP Pro I have small network setup at home so that we can use our desktops printer and for some reason when I turn the laptops on they won't connect to the internet. After I restart the pc 10 - 20 times somewhere it finally catches and I am on. The same thing happens to me at work with my laptop when I plug in. Both networks are peer to peer and both are run on Lynksis Routers. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

It may be that both are using the same subnet; i.e. 192.168.1.1. It is possible no new DHCP request is made in certain circumstances:
Workaround:

. Use a different subnet range on the Home router. Instead of 192.168.1.1 as the LAN IP of the router, change it in the router setup to 10.0.0.1, which will change the DHCP subnet assignments to 10.0.0.100 -- 10.0.0.149

. The Windows "Alternative Configuration" facility will not work well in this setting if the subnets are identical, but the Netsh.exe utility can be used:

Open a notepad session and copy and paste the below as Linksys_fix.cmd

*****copy and paste below this line *********
netsh int ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 192.168.2.254 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.1
netsh int ip set address "Local Area Connection" DHCP
******** end copy paste above this line *******

Note, you would run this any time you had a problem, it is not a one-time fix.
