I have my Toshiba cable modem plugged into a LinkSys Cable/Ethernet 4 port router. I have two pc's plugged into the router. My cable service has been working perfectly for 2 years now. Friday, I could not access the net through IE on both PC's even though both connections are enabled and show a transfer speed of 100MPS. I'm finally able to access the net using on IE on the PC with Windows XP loaded. I still cannot access the Net on my Win2K system. The only thing that I could have not to cause this was I deleted AOL Instant Messenger. I'm thinking I could have deleted some shared files. I power the cable modem and router and both PCs down. Before I power down this equipment I reset the router. I brought everything back up and now have access to the one. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue better?

I'm thinking I might have the same issue. I have two PC's hooked up to my network (cable modem/linksys hub). Both PC's show a transfer speed of 100MPS. I'm using Charter Communications diagnostic tool and it says it cannot find the network connection even though the connections are enabled. I cannot release using ipconfig/all, ipconfig/release. It cannot find these files. Does this sound like the same issue?

Do an Ipconfig /all on the problem machine and post it here.

bcastner-I went to start, run, ipconfig/all last night. I recevied an error message back saying it or one of it's components are missing. I hope this helps.

Is the TCP/IP stack still installed on that adapter? Goto properties of the network adapter and check that everything you to access things on your local lan and internet is installed.

Clients for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)

When you say go to properties, are you saying go to the enabled lan connection and look at the properties or go to the loaded tcp/ip and look at the properties? I think you want me to look at tcp/ip. I'm not home right now but from what I remember Clients for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP are loaded. I know there is one other item loaded but I do not remember what it is. I know tcp/ip is set DCHP.

Run the utility I discuss in this FAQ: faq779-4625

Yes. And Win9x, ME and NT. It adapts based on the OS version used and takes quite different approaches.

I ran the utility - still not luck. Just to make sure I did this right, first I ran the executable file. The dialog box opened and I clicked on fix. It took about 10 seconds to run and then the system was re-booted. I tried connecting to a website using IE. No luck. The connection dialog box still says I'm connected at 100 MPS.

davesaint,

You ran the utility correctly. Do an ipconfig /all again. If it throws an error again due to a missing component, try first an sfc /Scannow:

Reboot and test. If still no joy: You will need to do a repair reinstallation of Win2k:
You will not lose programs or data with a repair reinstallation of Win2k, but you will lose Service Packs and Hotfixes, so be certain to head to Windows Update to restore these.

I ran the utlities and it did not work. I brought my work laptop home today and disconnected the cat5 from the PC where I have access. I bounced the router and I had access on my work laptop. I disconnected the cable and hooked it back up to the the PC. I plugged another cat 5 into the router and bounced again and hooked it up to my laptop. It was able to access IE. I tried accessing IE with the cable that was just working and now no access. The common denominator is that I've only access through one connection at the same time. I'm not positive but I think the router somehow loss it's ability to handle more than one connection at a time. My daughter is working on a school paper where the LinkSys is so tomorrow after work I plan on reloading the LinkSys software to see if this resolves the problem. It's either the software needs to be reloaded or the router is bad. How do I know this? Currently I'm accessing IE from my PC with Windows 2K loaded on it. I took the cable modem and a older router that I have and hooked everything up. I have access. I'll let you know what happends. I appreciate all your help. Thanks!

So we can rule out the workstation. Nice job.

Do a firmware update to the router and see if the issue sorts itself. ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/

If not, return the router. The easiest way:

when you lost the connection, did you go looking around in the router's configuration page? maybe you changed something in there(DHCP pool maybe set to only 1 address)? have you tried to set the router settings back to factory default?

can you browse your local network? can you ping the win2k machine from the XP? or XP from win2k? can the win2k machine ping the router?

when it says that your network connection is enabled, that doesn't mean you have internet access. it only means your local network is functioning. for example, if you try to set up static IP's...you'd enable the option to specifiy a DNS server also. then if you go back to dynamic addresses...if you don't change the DNS settings back to automatic, you'll probably be able to browse the network but you won't have internet access.

if the router wasn't functioning your network connection wouldn't be connected(and the XP machine wouldn't gain internet access)...that's why I ask if the settings in the router have been changed.

might save you some time before you go and return the router.
