cannot connect to exchange from VPN

I have a windows 2003 server running exchange. I want to connect to the server from my laptop using a VPN setup to connect with my exchange mail. On the server I made a new VPN connection. when I dial in from home it says its connected, but I can't get exchange to work. When I ping the server and the server address it says that it is unreachable.

What am I doing wrong?

Host un-reachable usually is because of a gateway address or routing issue. What IP settings are you getting when connected via VPN?
