This is a shamefully simple problem. I have two Konsole windows open and I cannot close them. I have tried double clicking the top left corner, clicking the top right X and using Session and Quit. Each time I get a smaller window saying "Are you sure" etc with either Quit or Cancel buttons. When I select quit nothing happens.

Any help for a novice very welcome.

Trying is the first step on the road to failure

At the command line, do something like "killall konsole", or "killall -9 konsole". There's also an "xkill" utility floating around that murders unruly windows with a click.

If none of that works, grasp the tower's power cord firmly and snatch it from the electrical outlet.

;-)

What distro and version are you running? Maybe there's some errata filed on it, and it's just a bug in the package that's possibly been fixed.
