Problem:

I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Premium that will NOT access the Internet when connected to my small home wired (not wireless) network. The IPv4 Connection shows "Local" instead of "Internet and Local," and I am unable to change the "Local" option to "Internet and Local."

**********************************************************

Current Wired Network Components:

1. Time Warner Roadrunner Cable Modem
(Connected to D-Link Router with RG62 coax)
2. D-Link Broadband Router
(Connected to Items 3 thru 7 with Cat5e UTP)

3. HP Desktop (OS-XP)
4. Dell Desktop (OS-Vista)
5. Dell Laptop (OS-Windows 7)
6. Dell Laptop (OS-Vista) - Not accessing Internet
7. D-Link Printer Server

8. HP C4280 Printer
(Connected to D-Link Printer Svr with USB)

**********************************************************

Testing Performed:

Internet Access to Time Warner Roadrunner successful from
HP Desktop (XP)
Dell Desktop (Vista)
Dell Laptop (Windows 7)

Printing successful to Networked HP C4280 Printer from
HP Desktop (XP)
Dell Desktop (Vista)
Dell Laptop (Windows 7)
Dell Laptop (Vista) - This is the newly added laptop

Pinging successful to D-Link Rtr (Gateway) successful from
HP Desktop (XP)
Dell Desktop (Vista)
Dell Laptop (Windows 7)
Dell Laptop (Vista) - This is the newly added laptop

Browser Access and Internet pinging UNSUCCESSFUL from
Dell Laptop (Vista) - This is the newly added laptop

***********************************************************

Network and Sharing Center of Vista Laptop with no Internet:

PC ========== Network ========== X ========= Internet
" red X "

Network (Public network)
Access Local only
Connection Local Area Connection

Under "Manage network connection -

Local Area Connection Network Access to Local only

Under Genera Tab of Local Area Connection Status -

Connection
IPv4 Connectivity: Local
IPv6 Connectivity: Limited
Media State: Enabled
Duration: 01:48:48 (and counting)
Speed: 100.0 Mbps

********************************************************

Actions Attempted:

Disabled and reenabled Local Connection
Uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP IPv4
Searched all properties tabs for option to
change IPv4 from "Local" to "Internet and Local"
Matched all laptop options to working Vista Desktop PC
(Including TCP/IP IPv4 - DHCP)
Searched Internet for solutions without success!!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brad

This can be caused by quite a few things 3 things to start with.
1) Mac Flitering setup on router
2) Ethernet adapter set to a static IP outside range of DLINK
3) Firewall on computer

Have you tried swapping the connection sockets around in the back of the Router?

Can it connect from "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Has it ever been able to connect to the Internet?

Have you got another location (a friends or relative) where you can test the Laptop out?

Some people have resorted to disabling IPV6 to fix this type of strange problem, so it my be worth a try.

Check your IPv6 configuration
"Disabling IPv6"

Others have had to reinstall Vista to get it going, if you have put much on that might be an option.

open up a CMD line window, aka DOS Box, then issue the Command: IPCONFIG

and report back with the IP data that it gives out...

if you have NORTON, then uninstall it completely, ergo get rid of the piece of $^"&...

For the instructions on how to download and run the Norton uninstaller, please click on this link:

also the following could help:

Network connectivity fails when you try to use Windows Vista behind a firewall device

ECN Support may need to be enabled, also from a DOS Box issue this command netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabled

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

Disabled TCP auto-tuning with command netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Disabled TCP receive-side scaling state with command netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
