We are running exchange 2000 in our office with Outlook XP on win 2000 or xp pro clients.
Some users want to sync their mail remotely over a VPN connection but it wont work. The VPN is PPTP using standard windows vpn on client machines. They can connect to other resources over the vpn such as intranet and network shares using IP address but not names. If I type the exchange server IP in the outlook exchange settings then it resolves the name but still wont logon to exchange. If the users make a direct dial up connection to the server then they can sync ok - anyone have any sggestions ?

DNS is not set correctly.
On your VPN connection, you should inherit all settings for that connection, so your DNS and Default gateway must point to the VPN tunnel.

Marc, Thanks but not being an expert, Im not really sure where you mean - are you referring to the client VPN connection properties, if so what should I be doing exactly ?
Thanks for your help, Nick

Yes, in the properties go t the Networking tab - Select TCP/IP - Click properties - then click Advanced.
In General, the checkbox for gateway should be set.
In DNS, fill in the IP of the DNS server on the other side, as if you were there so to speak.
