I have a Windows Server 2003 SBS Server (SP2) and about 20 Windows XP workstations (SP3) in an active directory domain.

When I open My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>[DOMAIN] on the server it is empty.

When I open My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>[DOMAIN] on any of the workstations I get the following error.

"[DOMAIN] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I am trying to use the NT Client Install in Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and I get the following error.

"No Windows NT or Windows 2000 machines were detected int he selected workgroup/domain."

According to Symantec, In order for this to work the workstations must be accessible through My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>[DOMAIN]. They were not able to provide any help in troubleshooting.

Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

These issues are often caused by Master Browser failures or Browser election wars.

To troubleshoot, I recommend as a good starting place using a tool called browstat.exe

Check this link for usage.

Thanks for the link.

When I run the following command on the main server this is what I get:

Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790]
(C) Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>browstat status

Status for domain WIAA on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{6F1834CD-B427-47E5-95B2-21B530F5E609}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: ???
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build of browser master: 53
Unable to determine server information for browser master: 1113
1 backup servers retrieved from master ???
\\WIAA-SERVER
Unable to retrieve server list from ???: 1113

Looking on the second server on the network all of the workstations are in the My Network Places but the main server is not. Does this mean there is a conflict in Master Browser?

Hi again shirschwiaa,

I found RedLefty's original FAQ that helped me out. Maybe it will help you to isolate your problem.

Good luck troubleshooting your problem.

Have you got 2 network cards? I caused this problem on my network by enabling both, then one of my clients became the master browser. Check your event logs. I read every MS article trying to solve it, but I never sorted it out so I just disabled the one card again.
If there are 2 network cards Open Network Connections -> Advanced menu -> Advanced settings Check the order of your cards
