Having loads of trouble on a Compaq Presario notebook with XP Media Center that I'm trying to clean up for a friend.

The friend loaded and ran AVG Internet security, which came up with many viruses/trojans, some of which were cleaned and some were not. I attempted (using Spybot S&D) to uncheck a few startup items that were either unnecessary or clearly malware, and now I cannot boot into normal mode (gets past the XP logo, but hangs with hourglass before the login screen comes up).

I can log in using Safe mode with networking, and was able to run an online virus scan (Panda ActiveScan), which found 2 viruses, both called "Virus:Generic Trojan", which pointed to an EXE in the users' Local Settings\Temp folder (I have since deleted all files from there). But this did not fix my problem of not booting in safe mode. I tried "Last known Good Configuration", but no change.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can troublshoot the fact that I can boot in Safe Mode, but not Normal Mode?

Below is a Hijack This log, run from Safe Mode.
Thanks!

Check these and click fix checked.

Also if your running avg antivirus, download avg anti spyware from another computer and install it on there.

(set it to delete everything it finds

Also download this ccleaner

(download latest version on the right top in the green)

By the way when you choose last known good configuration that is reinstalling all the trojans removed so do not do that unless you have to.

Also download cwshredder from the link below

once done, post another hijackthis logfile on here

Yes, that was kind of a last-ditch effort to get the thing to boot in normal mode. I have had reasonable success cleaning machines before, but am hampered by the fact that I am stuck with Safe Mode (I don't think AVG will run in safe mode, but we'll see)

I'll try all your suggestions tonight.

it should, any antivirus should run in safe mode. If it wont you have a trojan stopping it.

OK, I fixed the "Hijack this" entries mentioned.
I installed AVG Anti-Spyware, updated, ran "Complete System Scan", found and deleted TONS of crap.
Downloaded and ran CCleaner, fixed all entries it found.
Downloaded CWShredder, nothing found.
Also ran Trend Micro Housecall, found 2 items which it fixed.
Finally, I re-ran AVG Anti-Spyware, and it found nothing.

Sadly, I still can't get to the login screen in normal mode (safe mode works like a champ, though!)

I think I know why you cant get into normal mode. You have norton and avg both installed. Norton does not get along with other antiviruses. Since from safe mode you can not uninstall norton usually, id uninstall avg antivirus not the anti spyware. Also uninstall any other antivirus and then try loading in normal mode.

If that dont work, load in safe mode, put in system disc. Go to start, run, type cmd and hit enter. In the command prompt, type sfc/scannow

If that dont work, download sp2 from here and reinstall it.

Thanks for the adivce!

Yes, I absoultely want to get Norton the heck out of there, but as you stated, I couldn't uninstall it in safe mode. I wonder if Symantec's Norton Removal Tool will work in safe mode? I'll give that a try.

I hadn't considered a conflict with AVG, and will uninstall AVG (and whatever other unnecessary apps I can) this afternoon and see if that helps.

THAT WAS IT!

I'm kicking myself that I didn't think to just uninstall AVG... I KNEW I didn't want both Norton and AVG on, but figured that since the machine was running for at least a little while with both, that a conflict between them wasn't the cause. Boy was I wrong :)

Thanks for all your assistance!

n/p, if your looking for an antivirus, I recommend antivir.

Also thanks for the star, very much appreciated.

If you do decide to go with it, here is how I recommend setting it up. Antivir is what I use. I have avg installed as well just not running. Either way choice is yours, just a suggestion lol.

This is to setup antivir after it has been installed.

Right click on the logo in the taskbar(a red square with a white umbrella), then left click configure. Towards the top left, you will see a box beside expert mode. Check this box. Now click the + beside scanner, and now the + beside scan. This will expand them.

Now click on scan itself to where it is highlighted. Now to the right under files, select the circle beside all files. Now click on action for concerning files. To the right, click the circle beside automatic. Now to the right of that, set primary action to repair and secondary action to delete. DO NOT check the box that says "copy file to quarantine before action".

Now click on archives to where it is highlighted. Make sure all boxes on this page are checked, if not check them. Now click on heuristic. To the right under win32 file heuristic, check the box beside "win32 file heurisitic", then click the circle beside medium detection level.

Now click the + beside guard and the + beside scan to expand them. Now click on scan to where it is highlighted. To the right under scan mode, check "scan when reading and writing". To the right of that under files, click the circle beside "all files".

Now click on heuristic to where it is highlighted. Check the box beside win32 file heuristic, and then click the circle beside medium detecion level. Now click ok and antivir is now setup for scanning.
