Cannot add a printer port

I have an NT server (not a PDC) which has a number of shared network printers attached (JetDirect, Lexmark etc). The problem is that all of a sudden, I can't configure any of the ports on the machine and I can't add a port.

Pressing the 'Configure' or 'Add' buttons results in absolutely nothing. There are no error messages and no 'At least one device or driver has failed......' type messages.

Oh, I can delete ports!

Any ideas? [sig][/sig]

well, start by not deleting any more ports. :)
second: what type of port are you trying to add? lpr? lexmark tcp/ip? local port?

have you tried installing the software that came with the print servers again?

which service pack do you have installed?

I've re-installed the JetDirect and Lexmark utility but still no joy.

When I click on Configure port, focus goes to the Close button and, when I click on Add Port, I get the dialogue to add a port but when I select JetDirect or Lexmark and click on Add Port, focus again goes to its Close button.

Will I have to rebuild the server, do you think? [sig][/sig]

I don´t think you can have more then one port at a time. have you tried deleting the port before adding it again?

when you add a port, I suppose you want access to the i386 directory, everytime you do such a thing you should reinstall your servicepack. Many wierd problems is magically resolved by reinstalling servicepack.

I don´t think you need to reinstall the server, but with micro$oft you never know.

I've found I can add the necessary network printing ports by directly editing the registry as follows;

LEXMARK PRINTERS
----------------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lexmark\MarkVision\LexDLC\Ports\<YourPortName>

Eg, where <YourPortName> is Finance;
..Ports\Finance Adapter Current Address :REG_BINARY, (this is the UAA)
Adapter Responds On Which Adapter Number :REG_BINARY
I set this to 00?
Adatper UAA Address :REG_BINARY, (this is the UAA)
Network Card Type :REG_BINARY, (I set this to 03)
Port Number :REG_BINARY, (Obviosuly, the port on the box)

Also, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lexmark\MarkVision\LexDLC\Startup Options needs a REG_BINARY added called 'Is Adapter <1, 2, 3, .... n> Activated?'.

When you bounce the LexBce and Spooler services, I have found this to work.

HPJetDirect Network Printing
----------------------------
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\HP JetDirect Port\Ports\<YourPortName>

Eg. Where <YourPortName> is Finance
...\Ports\Finance contains the following values;
HPNetworkPrinterID :REG_SZ,(Protocol,Address,Port)
eg. = 'TCPIP,122.225.145.221,1'
HWAddress :REG_BINARY, (this is the UAA)
NetworkProtocol :REG_DWORD (TCPIP = 0x2)
PortNumber :REG_DWORD (the port number)

Once you bounce the Spooler service, this works for me also.

Of course, you use this at your own risk but I'm happy with it.

Thanks for your help anyway! [sig][/sig]
