On an Option 61C, I'm trying to connect via modem so that I can dial into a switch remotely. I have a serial cable with a db 9 connection terminated to J13 on the switch side and the other end has a db 25 connection termminated to a US Robotics 56K modem. My modem answers, however, I'm unable to communicate with the switch. I get no indications at all that it's trying to communicate...please help!

Check your TTY ports are enabled? LD 37, enl TTY X

From another listserv I'm on: I'm not sure about step 8, tho--that sounds like it's a password in the modem itself (which I've never used)

Here are the settings we use for US Robotics Courier external modems
which work very well for us. We also use the password security feature
of the modem to give a little bit more protection. I would think most
of these settings should apply to any USR modem except perhaps the
security ones. I have tested them on an ordinary USR external with
no problem.
The calling modem should attempt to connect using standard windows
modem settings for compression, flow control, etc. and the pbx port
should be 9600,8,N,1 (although I think it can be any setting, the
modem should automatically connect to the port at whatever speed
it is set to).

1.) Reset switches (1,3 and 8 ON, the rest OFF).
2.) Connect directly to the modem at 9600,8,N,1.
(assuming TTY port will be 9600 baud on PBX)
3.) Enter at <cr> & you should get an OK response.
4.) Enter the following: at&f0 <cr> at&w <cr>
This should reset the modem to factory defaults and save the configuration.
5.) Power cycle the modem. Enter ati10 <cr>. This should display the
modem security settings. If not retry above steps.
6.) Enter: atb0f1m1x4&a1&b1&h3&i0&k1&l0&m5&n0&r0&s0&t5&u0&x0&y1%n6 <cr>
These are the communication settings (flow, compression, etc.). You must
get an OK response otherwise the command was not entered correctly. It would
be easier to just cut and paste the above text into Hyperterminal or
whatever you are using.
7.) Enter: ats11=70s39=10s40=0s41=1s58=4s59=0 <cr>
These are various register settings. Follow above procedure.
8.) Enter: at%a0=<password>,y,n,n,%l=pw0s53.2=1s53.0=1.1=1%p1=<password>
<cr>
These are the security settings. The first <password> is the dialin password
while the second is the remote maintenance one.
NB You must get an OK prompt following each of these commands, otherwise
start the whole procedure again.
9.) Enter at&w <cr> to save settings to NVRAM.
10.) Reset switches. (1,4,7 and 8 ON, the rest OFF).

Make sure the tty port on the paddle board (whatever type you are using is set up for modem. IE..DTC not DTE

my frist attempt would be to have some one test the io jack to make sure it is softwared right and have them use a null and a terminal, if it don't tale to that, then the problem is in the switch you will also need to have the modem set up right

I agree with John - test to a laptop or dumb term from the I/O port. Remember the DB9 mail connecter at the I/O port is not standard - you nust use a Nortel cable. we could send pinout if you make your own.

reusser.. the output from the 61 is db 21, the io from a 11 is pined to nortel standard...

This is the way I set up the US Robotics to talk to my Meridians and it works everytime.

1. There are (8) dip switches on the rear of the modem. Set switches S1, S3, S7, & S8 in the down position, the rest in the up position.

2. Connect the modem to a terminal or personal computer using a 25 pin RS232 cable.

3. Set the terminal or personal computer serial port to 9,600 baud (8 data bits / no parity / 1 stop bit ).

4. Turn the power ON to the modem.

5. Using the terminal or the terminal portion of the personal computer communications package, issue the following AT command. AT&B1&W&W1

6. Turn the power OFF to the modem, and disconnect it from the terminal or personal computer.

7. Set the (8) dip switches on the rear of the modem as follows. Set switches S1, & S4 in the down
position the rest in the up position.

8. Connect the modem to the Meridian 1 system as instructed in the NTPs.

fyi.. that same set up for the us rob was mailed to all bellsouth techs some time back and it is a sure fired fix. i would have posted it but couldn't find my soft copy.. thanks hawks, have a star on me and tell your boss i have approved a raise..ha

I'll do that thanks, and I'll let you know what happens with the T1 extenders.
