Cannot access Internet via VPN - PPTP

Hi Guys,

Hopefully a numbskull question!!
I have setup a VPN which connects via PPTP. The client computer (running XP Pro) connects and authenticates fine, however I cannot access the internet at all.
Does the PPTP connection directly route all traffic down the VPN or is there a way to access the net whilst the VPN is connected? Is it easier to access the internet through the server the VPN terminates on?

if you check the advanced tcp/ip properties for the vpn connection, is the 'use default gateway on remote network' checked?
