Hi, where I work we need to access ftp sites for numerous reasons and recently I discoverd that some machines that should have the same configuration cannot access ftp sites.
All our machines are running IE6. We can access ftp sites that don't require loging in. The computers that can access ftp are win98se and the ones that can't are just win98. One thing I noticed is that in internet options the win98 first editions dont' have "enable folder view for ftp sites" and other then that and the o/s version everthing is the same. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

gcw1,

IE 5.x, IE 6 and Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows 2000 includes a new shell extension called FTP Folders. This extrnsion enables you to browse FTP sites in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer using an Explorer-style folder-based interface. But this extension is only installed if you do a "Full" or "Typical" installation of IE.

With the inclusion of FTP Folders, there is now an option to "Enable Folder View for FTP Sites". Here's the confusing part. Selecting this option actually turns OFF the new FTP Folders extension and reverts to the older viewing method used in IE 4. If you would like to get the option [even if you choose the older IE4 folder view], pull down Tools > Windows Update and get the latest Service Pack and browser enhancements. Then you should have the option.

IE, before version 6, did not support authentication, i.e. logging in. IE V6 can be configured to handle user authentication by going into Tools > Internet Options and select Security tab. Then click on the Custom Level button near the bottom. Scroll down in the resulting dialog box until you see User Authentication. Select the option that is appropriate for your environment.

Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I installed windows critical update, this did not change things. I uninstalled ie6 and reinstalled and still no change, and trying the different settings in the security tab still did not change things. I have no idea why. All I know is the computers that can access ftp sites that require the user to log in have the "Enable Folder View for FTP Sites" option unchecked in the advanced tab. I for the time being have set up a ftp app that can access those sites on the computers that can't access required login ftp sites, but there's got to be a way of fixing ie6 to do it.

Thanks

Glenn

I uninstalled ie6, installed ie5.5 ftp works fine. Reinstalled ie6 and now everything is good. I found an article about how ie6 has ftp related configurations missing when it is installed. The only way around it is to install win98se, 2k, me, or ie5.5.

I haveWindows98SE, IE5.5SP2 and I`ve tried the Folders View for FTP. It certainly shows the site in Folder View, but if you try to access any of the folders by double-clicking, the only result is to bring up a Windows Explorer window showing the contents of the hard drive, etc, with no FTP content whatsoever. Disabling the option, I can access the FTP site and navigate through the directories in the listing view with no problem whatsoever. I`ve no idea why this is, I did a repair on IE to see if it made any difference, but it didn`t. One of those little quirks in Windows that one comes to know and, if not love, then at least live with, I guess, unless one of you guys knows a solution.

aldiboronti,

Hmmm, strange. I have IE 5.5/SP2 on an NT machine and it behaves the way it is supposed to.

What does the banner/marquee of the window say when you double-click on one of these folders? Do I understand correctly that the window shows the content of YOUR hard drive and not the FTP folder?

Thanks for the response. Yes, it`s my own hard drive that the window shows, and the banner title shows no change at all. For instance, ftp://a.cs.uiuc.edu/ displays its contents in folder view. Double-clicking a folder will have exactly the same result as if I`d opened My Computer in Explorer view, the address bar on IE showing ftp://a.cs.uiuc.edu/ as before.

aldiboronti,

Not sure what is going on here but I would suggest doing a Tools > Windows Update and ensure you've got all the critical security updates installed. There have been a few IE exploits involving FTP and the ability to see local disk files.

Also make sure you are running an anti-virus program and keep the virus library updated.
