I've only done that once where it was taking more than 2 hours to do a backup and I canceled it and everything was OK. I started a new backup but only Telephony and it worked OK.
If that doesn't work than in the front of the BCM there is a row of 10 LED's. on right there is a small hole, use a paperclip to push the reset button. And if that doesn't work just do a cold reboot.
