Can you send SIGINAL from a machine to a PDA

I stumbled onto this forum. I am attempting to design an ACCESS DATABASE to do our bookkeeping. One of the things we do is Scale Weight Transactions. We have a barcode gun, we scan a barcode, place an item on the scale, scan a 'GET WEIGHT' barcode. The scale and gun are hardwired into a computer. I've been looking at WIRELESS SCANNER GUNS and POCKET COMPUTERS with built in SCANNERS and wondered if you could send the scale weight wireless to the POCKET COMPUTER or other such hand held device. It seemed to me that you would have to have WIFI to the scale.

Please forgive absolute novice to this.
