I have a G4 (733 MHz) with a little over 26 GB of hardrive space left. Apple told me the size does not warrant a partition, which I would need to separate OS X and OS 9, to be able to still boot from OS 9 (once I install Panther, I won't be able to boot from OS 9). I do understand that I can open old documents/applications within OS X in "classic mode" but what I am concerned about is that once I revise the documents, they may "somehow" "absorb" the OS X language, and I won't be able to print the documents (we have a Postcript Level 1 printer). I'm being overly cautious because this would be "catastrophic" to them. We need to upgrade to OS X to be able to use Adobe CS and other new stuff coming from an ad agency, and we will be outsourcing the film output for new documents only. They still expect me to be able to use the old imagesetter for "simple" documents. I haven't used OS X at all, and I have training CDs waiting for me, while I'm worried about these tech issues (the I.T. dept doesn't know much about Macs).
Has anyone been successful revising OS 9 documents within OS X and printing them on a postcript level 1 imagesetter? I use Quark 4.1 and Photoshop 7.0 (plus even older software). If not, how "hairy" is it to do a partition? I need to backup the stuff I already have before doing one, and the firewire external hardrive only works through OS X (see the problem?). I have 10.0.4 installed, and a disk for 10.1, but Apple said these are really "buggy", so I'm afraid to boot from them at all. I'm thinking the easiest solution since I will be running out of space pretty quickly downloading CS, Office Mac, Adobe 6 and Panther, is to buy a G5 and use the G4 for the old stuff, except my company doesn't approve big purchases very easily for the graphics department (they say it's not cost effective to buy a new imagesetter). We are behind the times in technology, even though they want to produce designs with new software. In the event that they decide to purchase a PC-imagesetter combo instead (they're cheaper), would it be a hassle to transfer all the Mac files over and still have them be "useable"?) Please help! Thank you very much.
