I've been looking for answers to this issue, but no one seems to have a handle on how this would be accomplished.

How would you take an existing SPS2003 portal site that was created in MSDE 2000 (with the default SPS2003 install) and move it (migrate it) over to a remote SQL server?

I know that adding the word "remote" adds a few issues, so even with that taken out of the picture, say move the DB to an installed instance of SQL on the same box as MSDE, can this be done?

All help is welcomed and appreciated.

Hi Mike, welcome to the world of pain, here is the kb article number you want Knowledge Base Article - 837848. Now I had to just move my Sharepoint databases from one server to another, needless to say it went wrong. Essentially what you need to do is backup using the Sharepoint tool, remove sharepoint and WSS, remove the MSDE, clean up IIS as the default application pools will be left and then reinstall (and if you want to configure a remote SQL box do it at this point not after!) Then it is a case of restoring from backup using Sharepoint backup and restore. Good luck...
