Hi all,

Well, I looked around in the forums that I'm subscribed to
and noticed that a whole lot of links are being posted to
external sites, now I thought it might be handy to have one
site that lists them all, would that be a good idea ???

Something like my current site, but having the Tek-Tips
forum names in a navigation combobox and then links with
more adequite (did I spell that right ???) description on
what the sites are about.

What are your thought about this, it would be like having
a database (I dont mean ASP here, since I dont know the first thing about ASP) online with good sites !!! I think
that would be really handy !!! If so, would you like to
help me out by submitting links ??? [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

I guess it really depends on your thoughts of what a "good site" really is. Depending on how busy your site is and how much you are in tune with your visitor's needs, it could be a great idea. The reason for Tek-Tips being so popular is the variety of forums it holds, appealing to many users. Can you be sure that your tastes in "good sites" is along the lines of your users?

It's just a matter of knowing what you are talking about and being able to sort the crap apart from the good links.

Well the idea is that I make a site which has for example

A General Topic page, HTML/CSS page, a JavaScript page and a ASP page.

What I would like to do then, is to put links with description on each page to sites which have for example
allot of information about JavaScript (which would end up
on the JavaScript page). And when a site covers multiple
topics, like: JavaScript, HTML/CSS and ASP, I would put
them in a "General Aera: Webdesign" page.

How about it ??? [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

Sort of like an online Favourites menu for programming. I think I've seen it done, but never done properly, not to my liking at least. Like most sites, there is a lot of potential, you just have to know what you and everyone else wants.

What about the ability for users to transfers items from their Favourites list directly to your site that would be added to a dynamic list (pending your approval of course)? That would be a great idea...if you could code it.

Well I was thinking, Office 2000 allows you to export forms
in Access to html pages, it would be rather simple, I would
just have to make a database containing a column for descriptions, link, and one for on what page it should go.

Really simple actually !!! [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

Really simple yes, but what makes it special from all the others?

1. Quality of links?

2. The ability of your users to interact with your site?

First of all sorry but my modem had quit on me yesterday,
so I couldnt respond sooner, but I have fixed it now.

Well it should be simple to use, there should only be good
quality links (I'm gonna check them ALL by hand). And I was thinking, maybe a threadminder like Tek-Tips has, but I'm
not sure how to do that. I'll figure it out.

But this site should be only for developers. So no Windows/
linux/os2 sites or sites that tell you about how to cross a RJ45 cable and other stuff like that. So what I want to do,
is make it for web and app development/design, so that
people have all they need on one site. [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

What kind of server do you hope to run this from?

Windows server with db support, I have found a free one, but
there isnt much space (a mere 20mb). [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]

Go with it. You need any help, don't hesitate to ask. I design intranet apps all darn day.

Hi mate,

You could easily save yourself a lot of work and get a directory script off the net.. Something along the likes of yahoo..(But of course a lot smaller)

I am currently building a directory of business sites around the UK. The only problem is that I have thousands of towns and villages that have to be entered by hand before I even think of adding any links to it.. [sad]

If you need any help with it, just ask..

Hope this helps Wullie

That's something I'm not sure if I like about the way many programmers think. Sure you can save a lot of time by using and modifying existing code but that is why so much stuff is the same across the internet. If you want to do your site right, I would recommend doing it from scratch on your own. In the end, your experience will be even higher and you can look back at your project and know that you accomplished something.

Or you could just ignore me. Just some food for thought. Ryan

I suppose it depends how much time you have to spare and also what skills you have..

About looking back and knowing that you accompished something, I will be doing that even though I did not write the script, I have just totally modified it.. Do you know how many different towns there are in the UK? And I have to enter the full path for each, from Country right down to a little village..

This is going to take forever to complete.. [wink] Wullie

Tell your employer to deliver it to you then,
digitalized !!! Saves you whole lotta time ... [bobafett] BobbaFet [bobafett]
