I was under the impression that you could connect IP phones remotely to the BCM as long as they had an internet connection. But from what I'm finding out with testing is that it doesn't work. I've setup all the port forwarding on my bcm's router but I don't get any audio on the remote phone. From what I can find it's because the bcm doesn't know the wan IP of the phone. Can this work without a VPN connection. If so anyone have a source on how to do this? Thanks

BCM's Router? WHat do you have? What ports do you have forwarded?

You can connect IP sets remotely without a VPN router but you do open a HUGE security hole as that connection has direct access to the network without any security or encryption at all. Nortel has long frowned upon connecting this way and strongy discourages the practice.

Don't know what box or software version you are on but Release 6 with Remote Teleworker license takes care of all those issues. Might be the safest option for you.

No not using BCM router using another router and port forwarding these ports 7000, 51000-51200, 28000-28511.

Equipment is BCM 400 with 4.0.2.21d software. How to I tell if I have release 6 or get it? I'll need to look into that.

From what u said u have a BCM 4.0. In order to upgrade the s/w u need to purchase an upgrade kit which comprises of a h/w & s/w upgrade.

Connecting without a VPN connection can be a little tricky. One of the problems you have to overcome is that IP sets dont like NAT so make sure your routers have NAT traversal activated. Also ensure that all the ip addresses and especially the default gateway addresses are correct.

Assuming that your ip phone is behind a router at the remote location you need to set it up for partial DHCP and set the S1 server address and DG correctly.

And you do need to upgrade your 400 to a 450 to use the remote teleworker feature. It is a bit expensive but is well worth it if you plan on deploying remote sets.

If you're not a trained vendor, I wouldn't recommend you try this upgrade yourself. You basically have to rip out the guts of the 400 and replace it all with new gear and the data is migrated from the 400 and imported to the 450 via the Data Migration Tool.

Not for the squeamish though. There are lots of horror stories of these upgrades going bad........but there are also some that went well.
