can you connect 2 pcs together via wifi 1

is it possible to connect two pcs togther via wifi. Just like you can with a serial cable?

+ if a have an XDA type device running windows mobile is it possible to connect that to my laptop that also has inbuilt support for wifi.

If anyone could let me know if this is possible or even better let me know how it can be done i would be most grateful.
