Can you access the backend of Sharepoint??

Does anyone know if it's possible to access the backend of Sharepoint via, say odbc SQL??

I would like to set the properties of individual columns at the table level in order to restrict access to certain fields.

You can, but you lose all support on sharepoint, and i wouldn't recomend it.

What are you trying to restrict access too?

In another thread Someone wanted to lock the field from users changing them and he was able to do so.
