XP firewall OFF
I removed the router and connetced directly to modem..same issue, powered cycled modem...same thing try to connect to yahoo.com hourglass time out...
every 20 min windows messenger popup comes up registry errors need repair, go to regfix.com....

installed fresh win xp pro sp1, same thing windows messenger popup comes up registry errors need repair, go to regfix.com....

IE and firefox went through all setting with CS, auto-detect etc...no issues....

Can a pop-up stob me from connecting to the net?
sending this post from work pc
tough times,
any help appreciated,

A couple of other things you may like to try.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove temp files and temporary internet files.

This regfix mesage may also come in via the Messenger Service (not to be confused with MSN or Windows Messenger etc.), you might like to try and disable that service and see if that has any effect. SP2 automatically fixes this security weakness by disabling the service.

linney,

I went ahead and re-formatted the hard drive. Put a clean XP Pro SP1 OS on. Ran the extensive cleaning procedure called about by on the new xp load...Of course pretty clean...

I have Roadrunner Cust Serv. telling me the pinged me 100X 50 packets sent 50 packets recieved etc Zero drops = good connection period!!!

Well not so fast..I brought my work laptop home with WIFI card built in..Tried to connect via my router(both hard wire and WIFI) and then bypassed the router, using CAT5 wire modem to PC direct..IE and Mozilla still in la-la land......Put my laptop in the car drove 1 block away, some guy has open WIFI network I was surfing right away from my car..........

Based on the above, RR is wrong, there must be an issue that pinging statistics don't catch????????I need a RR guy to come to the house and manually flush the line from the box outside?

anyway thanks for the advice,
Vince

sounds to me more like a problem between your machines and the modem. Either a setting on the modem, or the cable.

Hope this Helps.

sounds like DNS on the router and/or PC's to me.

Can you ping an IP address out from your home PC rather than pinging a URL?

So pinging will fail

but does pinging 216.239.59.99 work?

Also, can you ping the LAN address of your router - i.e. your default gateway? You can find your default gateway address by typing ipconfig/all at a command prompt.

Guys,

It turned out that the outdoor splitter was rusted through inside the CATV box....Tech replaced all the wiring...Of course I reformatted my hard drive for no reason then!

well anyway, internet is back!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tips..........
Vince
