I can think of a lot of apps or situations where a "tablet" runnig Access or Excel, which would use a VBA form coudl be sued to track anything. togehter witrh barcodes or RFID and perhaps NFC be teh next big thing to elimate paper.
I have a Windows 8 phone which can open a Excel or Word file but is extremely limited it what it can do compared to the "real" verision in Win 7.
the biggest issue with the Windows phone is no navigation keys. and no Outlook support.
I know use the cloud for it but I have contacts I don't want in the cloud.

So can Windows 8 Run Excel and allow one to click the Quick Access Tool bar in Excel and run VBA code?

Yes.

Windows 8 in Desktop mode will run anything that would run in Windows 7 just the same. Microsoft Office 2010 will run fine on Windows 8 in Desktop Mode. So anything you can do in Windows 7 you can do there on 8.

Windows 8 is just like Windows 7, but without a Start Menu. Funny thing is that after using 8 for a fair old while I don't miss the missing Start Menu.

No, Windows 8 phones and Windows 8 RT tablets and laptops cannot run normal Windows programs. Just to begin with they don't have the proper CPU.

Microsoft may sell stripped "Metro" versions you might install and use though.

Since he mentioned Windows 7, and we are in the Desktop Software section I assumed he was referring to Windows 8 on desktops not on phones or tablets. That was just ancillary information.

But you are of course right, Windows 8 for Phones, and Windows 8 RT for tablets cannot run desktop applications.

However Windows 8 Core for desktops, and Windows 8 Pro for Desktops and Tablets can run them just fine.

Yeah, this faux "platform integration" is going to cause confusion at all levels from the consumer on up.

There are ways to keep the good old Start menu in Windows 8. Since I had to get a new laptop, I ended up downloading Start8. Makes it look just like Windows 7, if you so desire, and you can still use the new UI (neé Metro).
