I am in the process of planning my infrastructure upgrade.
I have two Domain Controllers both running Windows 2003 and would like to move to Windows 2008 r2.

I was thinking of the steps below to achieve this:

1- Create from scrach two 2008 r2 servers and make them additional Domain Controllers.
2- Grab the roles from the Primary and demote it
3- Demote the remaining 2003 Domain Controller.

My questions are:

1- Does this plan sound right?
2- Can a Windows 2008 r2 be a secondary Domain Controller while the 2003 is still the Primary?
3- What should I look for during this process to make sure replication, roles grabbing..run smooth?

Thanks for your help.

No such thing as PDCs and BDCs since NT. You can have multiple DCs, but you'll need to do the schema updates for 2008 before promoting the first 2008 box to a DC.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.
