Hello:

I want to install Win95 4.00.950-C (FAT32) onto an IBM Server 9595-0PT, which is now running Win95 4.00.950-A (FAT16).

This would be a "29 floppy disks" installation (using "MAXIDISK" to create the floppies) - since I don't have a CD-ROM drive.

MY COMPUTER:

IBM PS/2 Server 95 (9595-0PT)
Intel Pentium 60MHz (75MHz detected ??)
64MB RAM
44MB Free RAM
SCSI-2 Fast HD, 2.25GB (1.99GB detected)
IBM XGA-2 Video Card
SMC EtherCard PLUS /A Network Card
Windows 95, 4.00.950-A Operating System
MS-DOS 7.10
MS Internet Explorer 4 (4.71.1712.6)
2.88MB / 1.44MB, 3.5" Removable Floppy Drive
32-bit BusLogic Bus Master Host Adapter
SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A Host Drive Adapter
MCA bus
BIOS Mfg. = IBM
BIOS Name = IBM SurePath BIOS, upgradeable by Flash EPROM
BIOS Ver. = 8.20 (Revision ?)
BIOS Cataegory = IBM PS/2 Model 80
Bios ID Bytes = F8 47 01
Bios Sub-Type = 47
Bios Date = August 26, 1993
Bios Data Segment = None
BIOS Level = 1
BIOS INT 13h Extension = NO
IBM 8513 12" Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse

NO sound card
No sound ("PC SPEAKER for Win95" causes shutdown trouble)
NO modem
NO cd-rom drive

If Win95-C can be installed . . . would I just "FORMAT" the hard drive for FAT32 and get "full use" of my 2.25GB hard drive ?

OR . . . must I "FDISK" the drive into C: and D: (first), before I FORMAT each partition ?

Would I need a Disk Manager or not?
Do I need a BIOS FLASH Upgrade first?

THANK YOU for any help, information or guidance.

Hello again:

I need to EDIT my initial POST.

My MS-DOS is 7.0 . . . in the above POST, "NOT" 7.10 !!!

why? ...
sorry to sound negative...but why spend any time (money) on this machine. $150 will get you a used brand name PII (lots of them are coming off of lease and going cheap).
My opinon....borrow a cdrom and load this machine with a minimal linux distribution and make it into a print server.

Hello STANHUBBLE:

I didn't want to spend ANY money on this machine at all.

I am giving it to my 7-year old granddaughter - so she can become familiar with a computer.

I just wanted it to have the SAME operating system as my own - so I could pass on programs and games from my system to her's.

Just wanted to know if this OLD BIOS ( 8-26-93 ) could handle the conversion from FAT16 to FAT32 . . . I realize there could be a YEAR 2000 issue with it, as it is now.

Should I go ahead and FORMAT it's hard drive for FAT32 and Win95-C ????

Thanks for the reply . . . and I understand your good suggestion about BUYING a better PC.

I do have TWO "other" new machines in my home, i.e., Win95-C and Win98SE.

Hello again:

Another EDIT of my initial POST . . .

The BIOS VERSION is 3.00 (I believe), NOT 8.20 !!!

Y do u want to upgrade to OSR2 version of Win95. What is wrong with your current install. You will only gain 100mb on your disk space.

There is no reason why it shouldn't work mind you. Just make sure you have all the drivers ready on floppy disk.

Check out:

This is the page on IBM's support site for downloadable files for your 9595.

Good luck though!
