Hello, everyone. We are using PHP 5.3.5 and Apache 2.2 on Windows Server 2008 and we need to port everthing into VM-Ware 5.0. So far I have not run into any postings that scream "Don't Do It!" or "You'll Be Sorry", but not finding any evidence of a problem does not mean that a problem does not exist.

Would anyone know of any issues in moving PHP 5.3.5 and Apache 2.2 on Windows Server 2008 to VM-Ware 5.0? Are there any steps to be taken to ensure a seamless cutover?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

There are probably a lot more details that could be given but nothing seems to jump out as a red flag.

I'd question the use of Windows if you have no need to run IIS. You could just make a VM of Linux with Apache/PHP... no licensing cost... less system resources needed. It is easy to manage a headless Linux VM server with Webmin (webmin.com)

Thanks, spamjim!

Unfortunately, the use of Windows is mandated. I can't get around it (despite my best attempts). And no, I am not using IIS.

Please let me know what additional information you could use. I'll tell you all that I can.

All the best,

The area to discuss 'additional information' would fall only in the realm of VM. There should not be any extraordinary issue with PHP itself. So just make sure that you understand what is involved with either converting your physical server to a VM or what is involved with installing a fresh Windows server OS in a fresh new VM. The latter might pose problems if system paths & installations are not identical to the original physical system. The former might pose problems by carrying over unwanted junk that has accumulated in the old physical system.

And of course with any VM, you should make sure that the new host on which it will reside has the same or greater resources as the original machine.

Do you mean VMWare workstation 5.0? This is quite an old one. Workstation is now at 8.0 and player is at 4.0.

I've used PHP and apache on XP, Vista, W7, Server 2000 and Server 2003 but not 2008 but that is on Player 3.x which is equivalent to Workstation 7.x. Some of those VMs have been in constant use for almost 3 years and we've never had any problems.
