Can users use DB if I limit access to network folder where backend is?

I don't know anything about the specifics of the network I will be using, but I plan to put a split database onto our company's network for exclusive as opposed to shared use...it will be in a folder where I can ask for permissions to be set up so only the users have access to the folder...but I want to make sure the backend is 'safe' and won't be accidentally deleted, etc., so I would like to further restrict access to that file to just the db administrators, etc. (perhaps by putting it in a sub folder that will also have permissions set for who can open the folder). Without knowing anything about the network, does anyone know if my users will be able to enter data into the database if the backend file is in a folder where they aren't permitted to go? (Sorry if this is confusing)...

Thanks!

I think i understand your question...

If the user can't open the file them selves, then a program the user is running (your front end) wont be able to do it wither because the program is accessing the network using the credentials(the login info) of the user...

One way around this is to not use it as a regulare linked database, but to setup a dsn through the setver it's being hosted on...

Then the users don't need explicit access to the file itself...

But i don't know how this will effect speed of the app, or on the servers general performence...

Hope this has helped...

Life is change. To deny change is to deny life.

That was pretty much what I was afraid of (the front end not being able to access the network based on the credentials of the user). I don't know anything about setting up dsn's (data source name, right?) or if that is an option, but it is somthing I will make a note to consider.

Thanks James!
