I have students working on a yearbook using pagemaker 6.5. We want to have only one publication and have all the students work on different pages in this publication. Is it possible and how do I set it up?

Hi,

No. It isn't even a good idea to open a pagemaker document from a network server

bdyer,

Here is an excellent article about PM and networks.

It is highly recommened that you do NOT run PM over a network, or work on files over a network.

The main reason for not working across the network is the lack of error checking. When you have an application open and it is saving files it is writing directly to the drive. The operating system checks and balances are side-stepped. With a complex file structure, this can lead to troubles. And even worse, you won't know there was a problem until you try to reopen the file. If you save locally, then use the operating system to move the files out to the network you get the benefit of error checking (CRC checks, etc.). Saving locally has the same risks with a complex file, but it doesn't have the myriad of glitches (time outs, incomplete data packs, data collisions, etc.) that occur on a network. However, in the real world you may have to work over a network. the above website tells you how to make the best of it. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

To Bdyer and others searching for this info:
While I don't doubt or dispute what grillhouse and viol8ion are saying, I can tell you that I work in a network environment and I open, close, and move files all day long onto a network drive and very rarely put any of those files on my local drive. I imagine my IT dept, along with the aid of Adobe, have worked out all of the network bugs. I am a graphics tech, not an IT'er, and I leave those issues to the experts.

But, to answer your orignial question, it is my experience that PM will not allow you to share an open file between two users simultaneously. I have found Microsoft products that will allow you to work on a read-only version of a file while the original is open on some other desktop in the system and the system will notify you when the original closes so you can save or make your own changes to that file. But Adobe does not appear to be that compliant.

If you learn how to simultaneously have several of your students work on various pages of the same document, please post that info. I believe it would be of great interest and value. [thumbsup2]

Adobe does not support or recommend using PM over a network... it can be done, I regularly work on files across a network.. however.. this is not recommended as there is no error checking upon saving a document. You could easily corrupt a document saving over a network or to removable media, and when that happens, you will NOT know until you try to open the doc at a later time.

The best and safest workflow is to copy all files to a local drive.. work locally, save locally, and then copy back. Work over a network at your own risk.

Also, beware of IT advice from a non-IT person. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

viol8ion I noticed that you have marked this thread and I hope you are still following it. I tried the link to mediaone so that I could read over the paper but it's not there any more. Do you know how I may access this paper?? thanks

Sorry about that.. that was his old website, here is the new link:

This guy knows his stuff, and is one of the few people I respect for his intimate knowledge of networks, whether they be Windoze or *nix. Anytime I have a question he blows me away with his knowledge. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
