A buddy is getting rid of a 21 inch compaq p1100 (trinitron based).. it is way too bright and it shows the scan line returns. He said he was able to use software to adjust it and make it look decent enough, but I'm wondering if there are adjustments inside the monitor? Any cheap steps I can take before looking for professional help? I saw a post in here where one guy doused his with compressed air to fix scan lines, so I will try that.. any screws or adjustments or anything?

ps, I'm aware of the electrocution hazard from the capacitors, so nobody will be liable for advice given =]

It can be alot of things. Clamping circuitry, or the timing around it, or a power rail that went out of its specs. Without a schematic or any adjustment procedure, you may have a hard time.

All CRT's commonly have brightness, focus and tricolour adjustment internally.
Briteness can usually be taken down very easily with a small rotation.
These screws are usually clearly marked but I cannot stress enough the possible dangers, so be careful.

One thing that will make the display WAY too bright is if the High Voltage adjustment is set too high; and yes there usually is an adjustment control inside. Again, be careful... there is 15,000 volts floating around inside even if it has been off for a while. Don't touch the fat red wire on the CRT tube or anything close to either end of it.

(They don't call it "fly-back" transformer for nothing).
