I know this might be a dumb question to most of you but me being unknowledgeable in this field I must ask...

Does the wi-fi card (like the ones that go on laptops) have to be of the same brand as the router? (something like lynsis)

The brands are not an issue, and even the 802.11b and 802.11g will work togther fine ...

don't include 802.11a in you network.
